These are some of the security news sites I check on a regular basis. I like them because I rarely see their posts on regular news (CNN, NBC, etc.) and most tend not to regurgitate articles or partake in fear mongering.
CSO Online, Salted Hash Top Security News Good for the enterprise CSO or CIO.
Krebs on Security A good look into underground or the dark side of the internet, and mostly non technical.
SANS Internet Storm Center Technical and good for Systems Administration.
Threatpost Technical and I choose it for the Mobil Security catagory.

Software
I like simple to the point add free software that works well. I recommend these along with a few for pay which I find well worth the money.
7-zip is great for zipping files in several formats, 7zip, zip, gz, tar, and more.
Any do is the best Android / iPhone / Chrome / Web app I have ever found to sync your Google Calendar and Tasks with your phone. It does a little fudging for tasks so they won't appear properly on your google account. Overall the look and feel is outstanding!

Clonezilla I use for disk imaging, the wizard could be simpler but I haven't found anything that works better for free.
Microsoft EMET is great at enforcing Data Execution Prevention (DEP) so it is a good defense regarding attacks from Metasploit and similar.
Notepad ++ is a nice Windows text editor, simple, small and the ftp plugin is nice.
NoScript a Firefox add on that prevents websites from running code on your computer. It will break your internet because so many sites run code on your computer, so you will have to tell it what sites are ok, and if you do it smartly it will block pop up adds.
